Jason Gillespie Highlights Shaheen Afridi’s Workload Challenge and Future Plans for Pakistan Test Team

Jason Gillespie, Pakistan’s recently appointed head coach for the Test team, has raised significant concerns about the heavy workload on star fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi. Speaking to the press in Karachi, Gillespie emphasized the critical need to manage the physical demands on pace bowlers who participate in all formats of the game, including international cricket and various franchise leagues.

Gillespie, a former Australian fast bowler himself, underscored the unrealistic expectation that multi-format players like Afridi and Naseem Shah can feature in every match. “Shaheen and Naseem are vital assets for Pakistan across all formats and in franchise cricket. It’s impractical to expect them to play continuously without adequate rest. Our strategy will involve resting them during less crucial matches to preserve their fitness and effectiveness,” he explained.

Drawing a stark comparison, Gillespie revealed that Afridi’s bowling workload over the past year has been three times that of Australia’s Mitchell Starc. “The volume of bowling Shaheen has undertaken is not sustainable. We need to be proactive in managing his workload to prevent potential injuries and ensure his longevity in the game,” he stressed.

Gillespie also shared insights from his discussions with key players, including Naseem Shah and white-ball captain Babar Azam. “In Lahore, I had in-depth conversations with Babar and Naseem. I encouraged Babar to play with freedom and confidence, adhering to his natural style,” Gillespie noted.

Confirming leadership roles for the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh, Gillespie announced that Shan Masood would captain the team. “Shan Masood will lead our Test side. Although he is currently engaged in county cricket in England, we have maintained regular communication. We will finalize and announce the squad for the Bangladesh series by the end of this month, including decisions on who might be rested,” he said.

Gillespie also outlined his commitment to building a strong bench strength for the Pakistan Test team. He plans to personally attend domestic matches across Pakistan to scout and develop emerging talent. Additionally, he will head to Darwin as the coach of the Pakistan Shaheens for two four-day matches against Bangladesh A, further demonstrating his hands-on approach to nurturing young cricketers.

With a clear focus on player workload management and talent development, Gillespie’s strategies aim to ensure the sustained performance and success of Pakistan’s cricket team across all formats.
