Afghanistan cricketer Ihsanullah Janat banned for 5 years over corruption

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has imposed a five-year ban on top-order batter Ihsanullah Janat for his involvement in corruption. This suspension, which takes effect immediately, was announced on Wednesday following Janat’s breach of anti-corruption codes during the Kabul Premier League earlier this year.

In a detailed press release, the ACB disclosed that Ihsanullah Janat was found guilty of violating Article 2.1.1 of the ICC Anti-Corruption Code. This article pertains to attempts to improperly influence the outcome, progress, conduct, or any other aspect of a cricket match.

“Janat has been banned from all forms of cricket for five years after being found guilty of breaches under the ACB and ICC Anti-Corruption Codes during the 2nd edition of the Kabul Premier League (KPL),” the ACB statement read. The press release further explained that Janat had admitted to the charges and confessed to his involvement in corrupt activities.

The ACB’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) has indicated that the investigation also implicates three other players, who are currently under suspicion for their roles in match-fixing activities. The ACU is actively investigating these cases, and further actions will be taken once their involvement is confirmed.

Ihsanullah Janat, who played for the Shamshad Eagles in the 2024 Kabul Premier League, managed to score 72 runs across four innings. He has also represented Afghanistan in 20 international matches across different formats.

The ACB emphasized the immediate effect of Janat’s ban, stating that he is prohibited from participating in any cricket-related activities for the next five years. This decisive action underscores the ACB’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the sport and their zero-tolerance policy towards corruption.
