Pakistan Athletes Poised for Multiple Medals at Paris Olympics

Pakistan’s sporting community is brimming with anticipation as several athletes gear up for international competitions, with high hopes of clinching medals for the nation. Dr. Tariq Ali Gujar, a former national and international athlete with a PhD in sports science from Germany, expressed his optimism about Pakistan’s potential for success during a recent conversation with The News.

Dr. Gujar emphasized that a few athletes are on the brink of delivering remarkable performances, owing to their outstanding track records and achievements on the global stage.

Arshad Nadeem stands out as the brightest prospect for Pakistan in the men’s javelin throw. Nadeem has already cemented his place in Pakistani sports history by becoming the first Pakistani to qualify for the final in any track and field event at the Olympic Games and the World Athletics Championships. His groundbreaking throw of 90.18 meters at the 2022 Commonwealth Games not only set a new national and Commonwealth Games record but also made him the first South Asian athlete to surpass the 90-meter mark. Continuing his stellar trajectory, Nadeem clinched a silver medal at the 2023 World Athletics Championships, marking another historic milestone for Pakistan.

Dr. Gujar also highlighted the potential in shooting, where Pakistani athletes are expected to shine. Gulfam Joseph is set to compete in the Men’s 10 m air pistol and the 10-meter air pistol team event. Meanwhile, Ghulam Mustafa Bashir will participate in the Men’s 25 m rapid-fire pistol event. Bashir’s journey includes representing Pakistan at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where he secured 18th position, and improving to 10th place at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. His bronze medal in the 25m Rapid Fire Pistol event at the 2022 World Shooting Championship further underscores his capabilities.

In the women’s shooting events, Kishmala Talat will represent Pakistan in the Women’s 10 m air pistol, Women’s 25 m pistol, and the 10-meter air pistol team event. Talat’s participation across multiple disciplines showcases her versatility and prowess.

While medals in other events might be challenging, Pakistani athletes are determined to improve their personal records. Muhammad Ahmed Durrani will compete in the Men’s 200 m freestyle, and Jehanara Nabi will take part in the Women’s 200 m freestyle. Faiqa Riaz, participating in the women’s 100-meter sprint, is keen to make her mark on the international stage.

As these athletes prepare for their respective events, the nation watches with bated breath, hopeful that their hard work and dedication will translate into podium finishes and bring glory to Pakistan.
