Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag criticized Pakistan’s white-ball captain, Babar Azam, following Pakistan’s disappointing group-stage exit from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. Babar struggled in the tournament, scoring only 122 runs with a poor strike rate of 101.66, and his highest score was 44 in a loss to the USA.
Sehwag suggested that if the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) decides to remove Babar as captain, he should also be dropped from the T20 team entirely. He argued that Babar’s performance does not meet the demands of modern T20 cricket, where quick scoring is crucial, especially in the first six overs.
Babar Azam responded to the criticism by discussing his future as captain. He mentioned that he initially stepped down from the role in 2023 but resumed it based on PCB’s decision. Babar stated he would openly announce any decision to step down from the captaincy and that any changes would be transparent. For now, he has not made any decisions about his leadership role, leaving it up to the PCB.
