Waqar Younis to Lead Cricket Affairs, PCB Chairman Shifts to Admin

In a significant restructuring within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has announced a division of responsibilities, appointing former head coach Waqar Younis to oversee cricket-related matters. This strategic move aims to enhance the board’s focus on both administrative and cricketing domains, sources revealed to Geo News on Tuesday.

Naqvi, who concurrently serves as Pakistan’s Interior Minister, has decided to concentrate on the administrative aspects, particularly in preparation for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. Scheduled to be hosted by Pakistan between February and March next year, the tournament’s successful organization will be a priority under his guidance.

The PCB Constitution of 2014 empowers the Chairman to delegate his responsibilities, allowing Naqvi to assign cricket operations to Younis. With his extensive experience as a cricketer and coach, Younis will be responsible for overseeing international and domestic cricket affairs, managing the selection committee, and handling the issuance of No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for players.

Naqvi’s vision includes greater involvement of senior cricketers in the governance of the sport. This was evident earlier this month when he held discussions with over two dozen former and current Pakistani cricketers to chart the future course of cricket in the country. He pledged to implement several key suggestions from the meeting, emphasizing the importance of incorporating input from experienced players.

Among the initiatives proposed by Naqvi is the establishment of cricket academies in Islamabad and Peshawar, a suggestion put forward by former Test cricketer Yasir Hameed. The Chairman also promised to enhance the quality of cricket grounds across the country and prioritize four-day cricket to develop the game’s longer format.

Furthermore, Naqvi committed to improving coaching standards by providing advanced education for coaches and recruiting qualified personnel. In a move to bolster domestic cricket, five teams will be formed, each accompanied by dedicated coaches and mentors, ensuring a comprehensive support system for player development.

This collaborative approach marks a new chapter for Pakistani cricket, aiming to leverage the expertise of seasoned cricketers to elevate the sport’s standards both domestically and internationally.
