South Africa’s Test captain, Temba Bavuma, has expressed dissatisfaction with the current red-ball calendar for the Proteas, highlighting their limited fixtures in the 2023-25 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. With only four matches played so far, South Africa finds itself in the seventh position on the WTC points table, facing an uphill battle to secure a spot in the final.
Bavuma pointed out the disparity in the number of Test matches played by South Africa compared to cricket’s “Big Three” — India, Australia, and England. This imbalance, he argues, forces the Proteas to constantly restart their momentum.
“It’s a common challenge for teams outside the Big Three. We feel like we’re perpetually beginning anew,” Bavuma remarked in an interview with ESPNcricinfo. “Our discussions often revolve around re-establishing our playing philosophy and blueprint for success.”
Despite the challenges, Bavuma emphasized the team’s resolve to make the best of their situation. “It’s not an excuse for us. There’s a palpable excitement within the squad, and we’re focusing on that positive energy rather than the factors beyond our control,” he added.
Looking ahead, South Africa has eight more Test matches scheduled in the current WTC cycle. These include two Tests against the West Indies starting in August, two in Bangladesh in October, and home series against Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
