Rohit Sharma to Lead India in WTC 2023-25 and Champions Trophy 2025

In a recent announcement, Jay Shah, Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), confirmed that Rohit Sharma will continue to lead the Indian cricket team in the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 and the Champions Trophy 2025. This decision follows Sharma’s impressive track record as captain, most notably guiding India to a T20 World Cup victory against South Africa in a thrilling final held in Bridgetown, ending an 11-year drought for ICC trophies.

Sharma, who took over the captaincy from Virat Kohli in 2021, has led India to significant achievements, including reaching the finals of the WTC 2021-23 and the ODI World Cup 2023, though India fell short against Australia in both instances. Despite these setbacks, his leadership has been marked by consistent performance and strategic prowess.

Shah expressed his confidence in Sharma’s leadership, stating, “Under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, I believe we have the potential to triumph in both the WTC Final and the Champions Trophy. His experience and calm demeanor on the field have been instrumental in our recent successes.”

The T20 World Cup victory was a significant milestone, and Shah dedicated this win to former head coach Rahul Dravid, whose tenure ended with the final, and to stalwarts Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja, all of whom announced their retirement from T20 internationals post the tournament.

“Congratulations to Team India on this historic achievement. This victory is a testament to the dedication and hard work of coach Rahul Dravid, captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja. Their contributions have been invaluable, especially in reaching three finals in the past year,” Shah remarked.

Reflecting on India’s journey, Shah noted the near-misses and the eventual triumph. “In June 2023, we came close but fell short in the World Test Championship final. The ODI World Cup saw us fighting till the end but missing out on the trophy. However, in the T20 World Cup, our perseverance paid off. I had promised in Rajkot that by June 2024, we would not only win hearts but also the cup, and we have delivered on that promise,” he said.

Shah also highlighted the crucial contributions of players like Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and Hardik Pandya in securing the T20 World Cup. “Their performances were pivotal in the final overs and throughout the tournament. As we look ahead to the WTC final and the Champions Trophy, I am confident that under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, we will continue to excel and bring more laurels to Indian cricket,” he added.

With Sharma at the helm, the Indian cricket team is poised for a promising future, aiming for further success in the international arena.
