Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat faced a major setback at the Paris Olympics on Wednesday, being disqualified from the women’s 50kg freestyle wrestling final due to a weight issue, according to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
Phogat was initially scheduled to compete against Sarah Hildebrandt from the United States for the prestigious gold medal.
In a statement, the IOA expressed its disappointment: “It is with deep regret that we announce Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the women’s 50kg wrestling category. Despite the team’s dedicated efforts throughout the night, she unfortunately weighed in slightly over the 50kg limit this morning.”
This disqualification results in Phogat being ineligible for a medal in the competition.
As of now, United World Wrestling, the sport’s international governing body, has not released an official comment on the incident.
