PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi Evaluates Babar Azam’s Captaincy After T20 World Cup Exit

LAHORE: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi addressed the media on Thursday to discuss the future of Babar Azam as the captain of the national white-ball cricket team. The scrutiny follows Pakistan’s early elimination from the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Naqvi confirmed that no decision has been made yet regarding Babar Azam’s leadership. He emphasized that consultations with former cricketers are ongoing to determine the best path forward for the team. “We have not reached a conclusion about Babar’s captaincy,” Naqvi stated. “I am actively engaging with ex-cricketers who are genuinely committed to enhancing Pakistan cricket.”

In addition to these consultations, Naqvi revealed that he has had discussions with head coach Gary Kirsten and assistant coach Azhar Mahmood about the team’s performance during the tournament. This comes in light of the team’s disappointing exit from the World Cup, highlighted by unexpected losses to the USA and India. These defeats, coupled with a washed-out match between the USA and Ireland, sealed Pakistan’s fate, preventing them from advancing past the group stage.

Naqvi’s comments underscore the PCB’s proactive approach in seeking expert advice to improve the team’s prospects. “We are focusing on constructive feedback from those who have a vested interest in our cricketing success,” he added.

As the PCB continues to deliberate, the future of Babar Azam’s captaincy remains uncertain, with further decisions expected after thorough evaluation and consultation.
