In a post-match interview following Hungary’s 2-0 defeat to Germany at the Stuttgart Arena, Hungary coach Marco Rossi expressed strong dissatisfaction with the referee’s decisions. Rossi particularly criticized the referee for allowing Germany’s first goal, which was scored by Jamal Musiala, arguing that Hungary defender Willi Orban was unfairly pushed before the goal.
Rossi, who rarely complains about officiating, described the referee’s actions as a clear case of double standards. He noted that while the referee allowed the goal despite the push on Orban, a similar incident in the second half involving Germany’s Robert Andrich resulted in a foul being called.
“In my career, I’ve never complained as a player or coach. I’ve never looked for excuses, but what the referee did tonight… the referee used a double standard,” Rossi said. He was also disappointed that the video assistant referees (VAR) did not correct what he saw as a clear injustice.
Despite his criticism, Rossi acknowledged that Germany likely would have won the match regardless, but he felt the referee’s decisions made it more difficult for Hungary. He also speculated about the implications of such refereeing in future matches, particularly if Germany were to face a team like France.
Germany’s Ilkay Gundogan, who assisted the first goal and scored the second, was taken aback by Hungary’s reaction, insisting that he did not foul Orban. He suggested that such an incident would not have been considered a foul in the Premier League.
Looking ahead, Rossi emphasized the importance of Hungary’s next match against Scotland at the same venue. He stressed that it is crucial for Hungary to secure a win to stay in contention in Euro 2024. Despite being on the brink of elimination, Rossi remains hopeful and determined to fight for a better outcome in the tournament.
