ICC Confirms Match Officials for T20 World Cup Final: India vs South Africa

The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Friday the match officials for the T20 World Cup 2024 final between India and South Africa. The much-anticipated final will take place at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on Saturday.

Both India and South Africa have had remarkable runs in the tournament, remaining unbeaten up to this point. South Africa dominated Afghanistan in a one-sided first semi-final, while India convincingly defeated England in the second semi-final.

The ICC has assigned experienced officials for the final. Richard Illingworth from England and Chris Gaffaney from New Zealand will serve as the on-field umpires. Richard Kettleborough will take on the role of the third umpire, responsible for TV replays and crucial decisions, while Rodney Tucker will be the fourth umpire, assisting with both on-field and off-field duties.

Indian fans may breathe a sigh of relief as Kettleborough, who has officiated six of India’s knockout matches in ICC events— all resulting in losses for India— will not be an on-field umpire.

In the second semi-final, India set a target of 172 runs after batting first. Rohit Sharma top-scored with 57 runs, and Suryakumar Yadav contributed 47 runs to the total. England had a promising start, scoring 26 runs without losing a wicket in the first three overs. However, the match took a turn when Jos Buttler was dismissed by Axar Patel at the start of the fourth over.

India’s spin bowlers, particularly Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav, dismantled England’s batting lineup. Patel and Yadav each took three wickets, while Jasprit Bumrah claimed two, restricting England to just 103 runs in 16.4 overs. Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, and Liam Livingstone all failed to deliver significant scores.

South Africa’s performance in the first semi-final was equally dominant. Their bowlers bundled out Afghanistan for a mere 56 runs. South Africa then comfortably chased down the target in just 8.5 overs, securing their place in the final with ease.

As the two unbeaten teams prepare for the final showdown, excitement is at its peak. The Kensington Oval is expected to be packed with fans eager to witness the culmination of this thrilling tournament. The selection of experienced match officials by the ICC underscores the importance of maintaining fair play and upholding the spirit of cricket.

India and South Africa will each aim to cap off their impressive campaigns with a victory in the final, adding another prestigious T20 World Cup title to their cricketing histories. Fans around the world eagerly await this epic clash, which promises to be a fitting finale to an exhilarating tournament.
