Hjulmand’s Stunner Secures Denmark draw against England

England’s hopes of securing a spot in the knockout stages of Euro 2024 were put on hold after a 1-1 draw against Denmark in Frankfurt. England’s performance was again underwhelming, echoing their labored 1-0 victory over Serbia in their tournament opener.

Harry Kane gave England an early advantage in the 18th minute, capitalizing on a defensive mishap from Denmark. Victor Kristiansen failed to track Kyle Walker’s run, and Walker’s deflected cross fell to Kane, who easily netted his 13th goal in major tournaments.

However, Denmark responded with determination. Morten Hjulmand equalized before halftime with a stunning strike from outside the box, leaving the England defense and goalkeeper with no chance. Despite their dominance, Denmark missed several late opportunities to claim victory.

England coach Gareth Southgate, known for his cautious approach, faces renewed criticism following this lackluster display. His decision to play Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield was questioned as the Liverpool right-back was substituted for Conor Gallagher early in the second half. Southgate’s attempts to inject energy by introducing Eberechi Eze, Ollie Watkins, and Jarrod Bowen in place of Kane, Phil Foden, and Bukayo Saka saw Watkins come close to scoring, but Kasper Schmeichel made a crucial save.

Denmark, led by coach Kasper Hjulmand, showed resilience, with Andreas Christensen and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg narrowly missing chances in the closing minutes. This draw leaves England at the top of Group C, two points ahead of Slovenia and Denmark. They will face Slovenia next in Cologne, with their fate still in their own hands.

England’s continued struggle to maintain early leads, a recurring issue under Southgate, was evident once again. The team must now focus on refining their strategy and performance to advance in the tournament.
