Australia’s premier leg-spinner, Adam Zampa, has expressed a strong desire to revive his Test cricket career, believing he still has a viable opportunity to make an impact in the longest format of the game. Despite his well-established reputation as a consistent performer in white-ball cricket, Zampa, now 32, is eager to transition back into the red-ball arena.
Zampa has been a cornerstone of Australia’s limited-overs teams, contributing significantly to their triumphs in the 2021 T20 World Cup and the 2023 ODI World Cup. His performances in these tournaments have solidified his status as one of the most reliable spinners in the world. However, Zampa’s ambitions extend beyond white-ball cricket, as he remains hopeful of earning a place in Australia’s Test squad.
In a recent conversation on the Final Word podcast, Zampa discussed his aspirations for a Test comeback. “I still believe there’s a realistic chance for me to play Test cricket,” he stated confidently. “If I were playing more Sheffield Shield matches with the form I’m in, I think I’d do really well. The limited opportunities I’ve had in the last couple of years suggest that I’m capable of performing at that level.”
Zampa is aware that his Test record, which shows an average of 46 with the ball, might draw skepticism if he were to be selected for upcoming subcontinent tours. Yet, he remains undeterred. “People might point to my average and say it’s not good enough, but I know how well I’m bowling right now. If I get the chance, I believe I’ll perform.”
Recently, Zampa made the decision to withdraw from both the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Major League Cricket (MLC) to ensure he remains fit and available for national duty. He has made it clear that his priority lies with representing Australia over franchise commitments.
Reflecting on his recent successes, Zampa emphasized his dedication to the national team. “Being part of a World Cup-winning team was a special experience. Looking ahead, I’ve realized that franchise cricket isn’t my focus. My goal is to keep playing for Australia as long as I can. The feeling of success with the national team is unmatched, and I want to chase that feeling for as long as possible. Signing a two-year contract with Australia was a decision based on my commitment to play every game I can for my country.”
As Australia prepares for a series against Scotland in the T20 format, followed by white-ball matches against England, Zampa is expected to play a key role. His focus, however, remains on the bigger picture—securing a place in the Test side and proving his mettle in the traditional form of the game.
