Ranjan Madugalle Becomes First Match Referee to Officiate 400 ODIs

Ranjan Madugalle has set a remarkable milestone by becoming the first match referee to officiate 400 One Day Internationals (ODIs). This historic achievement was marked during the third ODI between India and Sri Lanka in Colombo.

Madugalle’s journey as a match referee began in 1993, and over the years, he has also officiated in more than 200 Test matches, another unprecedented record. Additionally, he served as the chief match referee for the International Cricket Council (ICC) until the role was discontinued.

Former elite-panel umpire and ex-umpires performance and training manager for the ICC, Simon Taufel, lauded Madugalle’s exceptional career. “Ranjan’s career longevity is extraordinary,” Taufel remarked. “He was present at both the start and end of my international umpiring career. His service to Sri Lanka, the ICC, and the cricketing world has been distinguished and marked by integrity. This milestone is a testament to his unwavering commitment and dedication to the sport.”

Reflecting on his achievement, Madugalle described reaching this milestone as “almost dreamlike” in a statement released by the ICC. “It has been an immense honor and privilege to officiate in international cricket for so many years,” he said. “I never imagined that my involvement with the game would extend beyond three decades after my playing days.”

Madugalle expressed his gratitude to the ICC, Sri Lanka Cricket, and his colleagues for their support and camaraderie throughout his career. He also acknowledged the invaluable support of his family and friends, without whom, he noted, this journey would not have been possible.

Before his illustrious career as a match referee, Madugalle was a proficient batter for Sri Lanka, playing in 21 Tests and 63 ODIs. His transition from a player to a revered match official has been seamless and celebrated, underscoring his deep-rooted passion for cricket.

This landmark underscores not only Madugalle’s personal dedication but also highlights the pivotal role of match referees in upholding the spirit and integrity of the game.
