MS Dhoni’s IPL future in doubt, the legend speaks out

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) gears up for its 2025 season with upcoming auction and retention decisions, MS Dhoni has adopted a cautious stance on his future participation. Speaking at an event in Hyderabad, the 43-year-old cricket legend emphasized the need to wait for official guidelines on player retention before making a decision about his potential return.

Dhoni, a key figure for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), remarked, “There’s ample time ahead. We need to see the rules concerning player retention. As of now, the ball is not in our court. Once the rules are established, I’ll decide, ensuring it aligns with the best interests of the team.”

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently convened with franchise representatives in Mumbai to discuss several critical issues. Key topics included the Impact Player rule, the number of players each team can retain, and the possibility of a mega auction before the next season.

Speculation about Dhoni’s future in the IPL has been a recurring theme at the end of recent seasons. Earlier this year, Dhoni initiated a succession plan at CSK by handing over the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad. Under Gaikwad’s leadership, CSK narrowly missed out on a playoff spot, finishing fifth with 14 points, tied with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) but trailing on net run rate.

In the previous season, Dhoni transitioned into a role as a finisher, focusing on delivering powerful performances in the death overs. He showcased remarkable efficiency, hitting 13 sixes and 14 fours from just 73 balls. His impressive strike rate of 220.54 marked the first time he had surpassed a strike rate of 200, remaining unbeaten in eight of his 11 innings.

With the BCCI’s decisions pending, the cricketing world awaits Dhoni’s next move, as his choice could significantly impact CSK’s strategy and dynamics for the upcoming season.
