Arshad Nadeem, Pakistan’s Javelin Hope, Arrives in Paris for Olympics

Arshad Nadeem, Pakistan’s top javelin thrower and a key contender for the nation’s hopes at the Paris Olympics, touched down in Paris on Wednesday. Speaking to ‘The News’ upon his arrival, Arshad expressed confidence in his medal prospects, stating, “Yes, we just arrived here at the Paris Airport. InshaAllah I will go for a medal.”

Arshad reassured his fans about his physical condition, affirming his readiness to compete. “I am fit and would go for achieving success in the event,” he declared. His Olympic campaign will commence on August 6 with the qualification rounds, followed by the finals on August 8.

Arshad’s training regimen in Paris is set to begin today. Accompanied by his coach, Salman Butt, and under the supervision of Dr. Ali Sher Bajwa, an England-based specialist who has been monitoring his fitness, Arshad is determined to fine-tune his performance. Dr. Bajwa, who oversaw Arshad’s recent laser knee surgery, arrived in Paris a few days earlier to continue his work with the athlete. Arshad’s preparations included an intensive five-week training session in South Africa, reflecting his dedication and readiness.

Arshad’s recent fourth-place finish at the Paris Diamond League, following a year-long hiatus, has bolstered expectations for his Olympic performance. His previous achievements, including a historic silver medal at last year’s World Championships in Hungary, signal a strong possibility for Pakistan’s first-ever Olympic medal in athletics.

The Pakistani Olympic contingent, consisting of seven athletes and eleven officials, is now complete in Paris. Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) Secretary General Khalid Mehmood and POA President Mohammad Abid Qadri are among the officials in attendance, with Qadri arriving on Wednesday as a guest of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Mohammad Shafiq, the chef de mission of Pakistan’s Olympic team, reported that all arrangements are in order. “Yes, everything is okay,” he confirmed from Paris. Additionally, a representative from Pakistan’s Embassy in Paris has joined the contingent to provide support.

Arshad Nadeem and swimmer Jehanara Nabi will proudly bear the Pakistani flag during the opening ceremony on Friday. The other athletes representing Pakistan include shooters Ghulam Mustafa Bashir, Joseph Gulfam, and Kishmala Talat, female sprinter Faiqa Riaz, and Dubai-based swimmer Mohammad Ahmed Durrani.

With the nation’s hopes pinned on Arshad, his journey and performance in the upcoming events will be closely watched as he aims to make history for Pakistan in the Olympic arena.
