New Zealand Super 8 Hopes Hang in the Balance After Defeat to West Indies

After a disappointing loss to the West Indies, New Zealand’s hopes of advancing to the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2024 now rest on the outcomes of other teams’ matches.

While the West Indies have secured their path to the Super 8, the Black Caps must rely on Afghanistan faltering in their upcoming games against Papua New Guinea and the West Indies.

Afghanistan is set to play against Papua New Guinea on Friday (June 14), followed by a match against the Rovman Powell-led West Indies team on Tuesday (June 18).

Currently, Afghanistan boasts a strong record, having won two matches with an impressive net run rate of 5.225. In contrast, New Zealand has yet to secure a victory and carries a net run rate deficit of -2.425.

Scenario for New Zealand:
For New Zealand to remain in contention, they must secure decisive victories in their upcoming matches against Uganda on Saturday (June 15) and Papua New Guinea on Monday (June 17). The margin of victory in these matches is crucial for their qualification chances.

Furthermore, if Afghanistan were to lose both of their upcoming matches by a combined margin of 120 runs, New Zealand would need to win by a combined margin of 187 runs to compensate.

However, if Afghanistan manages to defeat Papua New Guinea on Friday (June 14), or if adverse weather conditions interfere with the match, New Zealand’s chances of advancing to the Super 8 will diminish significantly
